Before you begin

Read this with a grown-up

Safety

  • Named adult supervision for every session.
  • Small-parts and material guidance shared with every participating family.
  • All product safety and environmental claims require review before publication.

Nature and place

  • Written landowner or land-manager permission is mandatory.
  • No damage to trees, roots, plants, habitats, waterways or trails.
  • No food, no glitter, no loose plastics, no permanent fixings.

Making it work for everyone

  • Place at least one cluster within reach of a firm, level approach.
  • Provide a printed or spoken description of the village layout.

The build

Step by step

  1. Agree the plan in writing

    Land manager permission, placement map, review dates and a removal date, agreed before anything is carried in.

  2. Map habitats to avoid

    Walk the site with the land manager and mark root zones, waterways, nesting areas and drainage lines as out of bounds.

  3. Build in clusters, not carpets

    Small clusters with clear ground between them protect vegetation and read better as a village.

  4. Schedule inspections

    Assign named adults to inspect after storms, repair or remove damaged pieces, and log each visit.

  5. Remove and restore

    On the agreed date, remove everything and check that the ground has been left as it was found.

When you are finished

Write one line of the village's story, take a photograph from the same spot each season, and check the village on every visit. Lift it out before mowing, storms or the end of a permitted session.
