Before you begin

Read this with a grown-up

Safety

  • Adult supervision throughout. Contains small parts.
  • No lighting that could disturb nocturnal wildlife.
  • Do not create trip hazards or obstruct sightlines.

Nature and place

  • Never place items on public, protected or privately owned land without permission.
  • No fixings, no digging, no cutting of vegetation.
  • Follow local rules and leave-no-trace principles.

Making it work for everyone

  • Choose a trail pocket reachable without stepping off a firm surface.
  • Describe the village aloud as you build so it can be enjoyed without close vision.

The build

Step by step

  1. Get permission first

    Confirm the landowner or managing authority permits temporary placements. If you cannot confirm it, build at home instead.

  2. Stay off the trail itself

    Never narrow, block or divert a path. Choose a sheltered pocket well clear of where people and wheels travel.

  3. Build small and build light

    One or two pieces is enough. Nothing anchored, nothing buried, nothing attached.

  4. Take it home the same day

    Unless the landowner has agreed to a longer placement in writing, the waystation leaves with you.

When you are finished

Write one line of the village's story, take a photograph from the same spot each season, and check the village on every visit. Lift it out before mowing, storms or the end of a permitted session.
